Yeni Camii (New Mosque), Istanbul, Turkey

The Yeni Mosque is also know as The New Mosque or Mosque of the Valide Sultan.  Construction of the Mosque started in 1597 but was not completed for almost 50 years.

In 1660 when the mosque was only partially constructed it was destroyed by fire but later that year the imperial architect Mustafa A─ča suggested that the mother of Sultan Mehmet IV should complete the project as an act of devotion.  The Mosque was finally completed in 1663.
