Gateway To Abbey Gardens

The Abbey in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, England dates back to 633.  Over the years the relationship between the Benedictine Monks of the Abbey and the people of Bury St Edmunds, has at times been strained.  During the summer of 1327 riots broke out, several monks were killed at the Abbey Gate was destroyed.  The Gate which can be seen today was constructed during the 14th Century alongside the site of the original.and is still used as the entrance to the Gardens and Cathedral.
